It is with heavy hearts that we say “rest in peace” to Michael Bond, creator of our beloved Paddington Bear.
Paddington Bear’s creator, Michael Bond, is more than just any author. He created a character who is loved world-wide and whose voice will now be quiet forevermore. He created a character that has stuck with this Bear her whole life.
I will never forget the first Paddington book I ever read, “A Bear Called Paddington”. I will always remember the first Paddington Bear item I received- it was a small pendant of that adorable bear- my Dad brought back from a trip he took.
As silly as it sounds, the first time I visited England- I ended up in Paddington Station and I looked for a little bear in a blue coat and red hat, sitting on a suitcase. I had rather hoped I would find him so I could help him stow-away in my carry on and that we would have adventures in America together.
I still, to this day. smile when I stand at the front counter of the store and look up because Paddington Bear is sitting there. My favorite holiday decoration IS Paddington when the colorful wreath sits around his neck. I will always WISH I loved (or even liked) marmalade as much as Paddington does.
Tonight, I will sit down with my little one and read a Paddington book in honor of the wonderful man who we honor today.
Farewell, Michael Bond. Thank you for all the marvelous stories you wrote. Thank you for the stories that made a crabby teenager stop and look for your Bear in Paddington Station. Thank you for all the wonderful memories you have given me and for all the wonderful memories I will be passing my to children.
